Conscious Leadership – in short

Rather than fusing together diverse talents to arrive at positive and high impact goals, most often, individuals within a team present the most substantial obstacles to the goals. If organizations truly understood, beyond the smooth PR talk, how the inspired team member naturally engenders increased creativity and productivity, the face of business would look dramatically different.

In organizations, where a performance-oriented culture and responsible approach are understood to be the foundations of success, it is critical to create an environment of creativity, commitment, trust and collaboration. This module is aimed at training individuals to naturally facilitate such a work atmosphere based on high levels of personal awareness and inspiration.

Conscious Leadership – syllabus

Session 1 – Introduction to Conscious Leadership & Crimson Greetings Simulation

We open by understanding our notion of what makes a leader, how our varied ideas on leadership affect us, and what makes for conscious leadership. We then gain personal experience of how our own leadership plays out in different scenarios.

Session 2 – Understanding Your Ego & Levels of Consciousness

We closely examine the connection between consciousness and leadership by looking at the driving force behind all our decision-making – our egos. Our egos bring specific sets of gifts and insecurities that strongly influence how we view the world. Without building powerful awareness of how our egos function, it’s impossible to be at our most effective in decision-making and in relationships. This module will serve as an introduction to three levels of consciousness and nine specific ego lenses (the Enneagram framework) that give rise to nine different leadership styles.

Session 3 – The Challenger & The Peace-Seeker

We tour the first two leadership styles: The Challenger and The Peace-Seeker. Through stories, film clips and exercises, we’ll enter the world of these two types for a full experience of how they show up and can positively or negatively impact others, according to their level of consciousness.

Session 4 – The Moralist & Group Panel

We tour the next leadership style: The Moralist. Through stories, film clips and exercises, we’ll enter the world of the type for a full experience of how they show up and can positively or negatively impact others, according to their level of consciousness. We then form a panel made up of students who identify as Challengers, Peace-Seekers, and Moralists, where they share personal experiences of what it’s like to be their personality type.

Session 5 – The Helper & The Achiever

We tour the fourth and fifth leadership styles: The Helper and The Achiever. Through stories, film clips and exercises, we’ll enter the world of these two types for a full experience of how they show up and can positively or negatively impact others, according to their level of consciousness.

Session 6 – The Individualist & Group Panel

We tour the sixth leadership style: The Individualist. Through stories, film clips and exercises, we’ll enter the world of the type for a full experience of how they show up and can positively or negatively impact others, according to their level of consciousness. We then form a panel made up of students who identify as Helpers, Achievers, and Individualists, where they share personal experiences of what it’s like to be their personality type.

Session 7 – The Investigator & The Loyalist

We tour the seventh and eighth leadership styles: The Investigator and The Loyalist. Through stories, film clips and exercises, we’ll enter the world of these two types for a full experience of how they show up and can positively or negatively impact others, according to their level of consciousness.

Session 8 – The Enthusiast & Group Panel
We tour the ninth and last leadership style: The Enthusiast. Through stories, film clips and exercises, we’ll enter the world of the type for a full experience of how they show up and can positively or negatively impact others, according to their level of consciousness. We then form a panel made up of students who identify as Investigators, Loyalists, and Enthusiasts, where they share personal experiences of what it’s like to be their personality type.

Session 9 – Conscious Leadership Case Competition

We break into groups to solve a multi-faceted organizational dilemma using our insights into the nine leadership styles and the levels of consciousness. Students present their solutions as we determine together what’s effective and what are the pitfalls.

Session 10 – Conclusion

This closing session will bring together key takeaways and encourage regular practices for each of the leadership styles. We will have one final Q&A session to gain clarifications and crystallize our learnings, followed by sharing our personal reflections from the week together.

Testimonials

Upbuild is not some class you take at university and talk about years later as you recall random bits of knowledge. Upbuild is a way of life. It is something you live and breathe and contemplate every day. It is a community to which you will forever be connected regardless of time, distance, or circumstance. An experience with Upbuild can take many forms. For me, it was the Excavating Your Ego Type Enneagram program. The program took place over two consecutive weekends with a group of approximately 40 individuals that largely began as strangers and ended up as lifelong friends. Through a series of short lectures, multimedia, and panels made up of we the students, we learned about ourselves and those around us. We learned about those we know so dear and those we realized we never really knew at all. Upbuild is an adventure and a gift.
Michael Sloyer, Managing Director at Goldman Sachs

I think that we are being asked more and more frequently to forget that we and those with whom we work are human – we are expected to manufacture ideas, pump out creative content, and never disconnect from work, all leading to a sense that we are not being recognized as holistic beings with hearts and souls and brains that need nourishment through connection and introspection. That is one of the reasons the work of Upbuild is so essential. It has given me a new language with which I could describe how I experience the world. Understanding nine ego lenses has helped me to feel connected to a tribe of people who experience the world in a similar way and who may have many of the same struggles. At the same time, it has also helped me increase my appreciation for the value that each different lens brings to the world. This vocabulary prompts me to have important conversations about our individual experiences and viewpoints. I had an amazing experience with Upbuild and I would recommend it to anyone.
Jessica Lawrence, Chief Operating Officer at Civic Hall

I’ve enjoyed attending Upbuild programs at the Bhakti Center and benefited immensely. They bring together a diverse group of curious minds. We’ve listened, questioned, debated and integrated. By judiciously mixing lectures, movie clips, group discussions and guest speakers, the teachers made it really fun. Taking a break from my hectic schedule and attending Upbuild programs was one of the best gifts I’ve given myself.
Ravi Kumar, Investor and Board Member at 1Crowd and Mojro

The Upbuild facilitators completely astound me by their compassion, wisdom (that is far beyond their years – after all, they don’t have that many more of them under their belt than I do!), and the generosity with which they share that wisdom with people and touch their lives. They create a safe space where complete strangers are able to share intimately with each other as they go through journeys of learning and self-discovery. That means that rather than simply imparting knowledge with the authority bestowed on them by their position behind the teaching desk, the facilitators are able to empower people to look into themselves and uncover truths from within. For the kind of material that they teach, that ability to create trust is so powerful! Upbuild is a place where New Yorkers from all walks of life come together to learn about what it is to be human, without pretension. If you’re open to it, it will change your life and make you a better human being.
Geoffroy Bablon, Head of Product at Capsule

The Upbuild Personal Development workshops have been a really strong prompt toward self-discovery for me. It is a community initiative led by the most empathetic, unconditionally accepting people I have met. They combine a series of workshops, teachings, as well as book and movie clubs to discuss the human condition, and our search for happiness and meaning. These programs give me a great framework for examining my personality and emotions and assessing their cause and impact in my life. They’ve also helped me assess the same for others who are intimately tied to my emotional happiness, whether that be a parent, co-worker, significant other or close friend. By having a smart lens through which to see my emotions and my interactions, I’m much better outfitted to engage, not only with others, but even with myself, in a healthy and empathetic way.
Joanna Ehrenreich, Head of Operations and Marketing at Toast Ale USA

Hari Prasada and Rasanath create a trusting yet challenging environment that is fertile for discovery. They challenge conventional management techniques and present refreshing alternatives. Their research is thorough and intelligent, their approach imaginative, and their delivery humorous and graceful. They heighten our internal sense of awareness and present the incredible promise that the power to change exists within each of us.
John Servin, Director of Asset Management and Retirement Planning at The Fleischer Jacobs Group

Rasanath and Hari bring both nuanced complexity and elegant simplicity to their facilitation of the Enneagram work with teams and individuals. They integrate exquisite care and sensitivity, with fortitude and challenge, resulting in an ideal environment for reflection, growth and risk. They are highly attuned to group dynamics and handle them deftly and skilfully in order to get to the heart of what is at play within a team and guide team members to new ways of seeing and understanding each other. As a result, life-changing transformation can occur both at the individual level and the team/system level. Their fierce intellect is only matched by their profound humility. I highly recommend them!
